In 1884, HSBC Malaysia established its first office in Penang, marking the beginning of a longstanding relationship with the country, driven by the need to facilitate trade and serve the international needs of customers here. In 1984, HSBC was the first foreign bank to locally incorporate in Malaysia, forming Hongkong Bank Malaysia Berhad. And in 2007, HSBC Bank Malaysia Berhad was the first locally incorporated foreign bank to be awarded an Islamic banking subsidiary licence in Malaysia. More recently, in 2022, the bank opened the doors to its country head office, Menara IQ, at the international hub for finance and business at Tun Razak Exchange in Kuala Lumpur from where it continues to strengthen its suite of offerings across retail and corporate banking.HSBC has approximately 6,000 employees in Malaysia, inclusive of employees in the bank and its network of 54 branches nationwide, along with its global shared service centre.

HSBC’s presence in Malaysia dates back to 1884 when the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited established its first office in the country on the island of Penang, with the permission to issue currency notes. HSBC Bank Malaysia Berhad was locally incorporated in 1984 and is a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited, founding member of the HSBC Group. In 2007, HSBC Bank Malaysia was the first foreign bank to be awarded an Islamic banking subsidiary licence in Malaysia, namely HSBC Amanah Malaysia Berhad. HSBC Malaysia offers a comprehensive range of banking and financial services including Islamic financial solutions. HSBC Malaysia has also led innovation in Malaysia by introducing Malaysia’s first ATM and Electronic Touch Banking in the early 1980s.
